Emergency lighting is designed, installed and tested to BS 5266. Its job is simple: when the normal power supply fails, people must still be able to see their way out of the building safely.

It is not optional. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 most non-domestic premises must provide emergency escape lighting, and it must be tested and recorded on a fixed schedule. Missing or untested emergency lighting is one of the most common findings at fire safety inspections.
